A quote from the Rambo movies (which I actually have never seen, maybe I’ll change that) immortalized in messy black and white type displays by Erik Marinovich at Friends of Type. Although I don’t know if I totally agree with the advice I think it looks really great, and I refuse to start critiquing my lifestyle and future goals based on a line from Rambo.

For the ‘Be Prepared’ issue of Ferocious Quarterly, which looks perfect. It is loosely based on a ‘survival’ theme and it features a slew of talented people I admire.

The newest contribution to The Fox Is Black’s fantastic Desktop Wallpaper Project is by Nick Agin. The subject (a vintage sewing machine) is beautiful, the texture used throughout is thoughtful and very nice, and there’s plenty of grey area for you to fill with icons because you save too many things to desktop. And did you catch the solid advice written in the thread? Here:

I posted about a ‘normal-sized’ zine by Faye Moorhouse not too long ago, but I want to share this gorgeous, gigantic one now.

On Spetember 4th 1967 six unidentified flying object were found in six different locations along the south coast. They were all positioned equidistanly along the 51.5 paralell. The M.O.D. said it was an elaborate hoax.

Winkfield is printed on A3-sized paper, which is good because we need all that space to effectively feel like a part of each spread. The scenes are simple, but there is detail, texture and plenty of emotion for the viewer to lose themselves in.

I am SO stoked for new Chris Rehm tunes! The lo-fi noise on his side of the Old Flame | New Squeeze tape is still absolutely incredible. Here’s the first single, Coming Up Roses, from the upcoming release called [i found an] Elephant Ring [and gave it to you]. It features a low, steady beat and for a minute it finds a pretty crunchy groove.

Also, the a/v hocus-pocus that created the staticy video here rules.

The source video was created by plugging an 1/8”-rca cable out of my computer playing this song, into the rca video-in on a little tv. I put it on the “video” setting, and the tv converted the audio information to organized static - the louder the sound is, the brighter the static, and the lower the frequency, the wider the band is.

Speaking of music I listened to in high school…

I remember always drooling over The Bamboozle lineup every single year and just dying because I didn’t live anywhere near New Jersey. Now I’ve been to New Jersey (it was ok) and don’t really give this fest much thought. But, it seems like they had some really awesome artists and a few of the musician/fan side-by-sides here are kinda really hilarious.

Literature - Esquire Esquire

I listened to a lot of music that I called ‘powerpop’ in high school, and maybe because of that I tend to somewhat roll my eyes at it. But I think that it is exactly what sets the Austin, TX band Literature apart from a lot of the other jangle-sounding groups making music right now. They released Arab Spring back in January for free.

In this track things are arranged nice and tightly. And when they hurry through the short punky chorus that pops up I am more than ready to sing along. Can’t win, can’t lose. So what am I supposed to do?

Director Mimi Cave nailed this (just like she did with The Bizness). I think the image of the little kid reaching out from under a pile of balloons to play the keyboard rules. Cave offers some behind the scenes information and photos and you can see that a lot goes into each vid. I bet the set was bursting with energy and an incredible place to be!
